Shin Splints

What are shin splints?

Shin splints is a term used to describe pain along the main bone of your lower leg known as your tibia or shinbone. Shin splints (otherwise known as medial tibial stress syndrome) are common in runners or in individuals that play a lot of sports that involve running, such as soccer or basketball.

Shin splints cause

The exact cause of the pain is unclear, however it is commonly associated with an increase in running, weight gain, flat feet, poor or ill-fitting footwear or incorrect running technique.

Shin splints symptoms

Shin splints often present as aches and pains, can be sore to touch or the skin can be inflamed and red. The pain is usually felt during or after running.

Shin splints treatment

Treatments such as rest, activity modification, ice, anti-inflammatory medications and customised foot orthotics have all been known to alleviate shin splints.
