Summer Is Just Around The Corner

The sun is starting to shine more often, the days are getting that little bit longer. It can only mean one thing. Summer is nearly here! So that means it is the perfect time for you to start thinking about getting your feet ready for the season ahead.

Your team at Hills District Podiatry have put together a short three part series on how to get your feet ready for summer. Let’s start with:

Part One: Getting Back To Exercise

As the weather warms up and swimsuit season is nearly upon us, you might start thinking about exercising. If so, have you considered your feet and the footwear you choose?

If you plan on starting a new exercise program, your choice of footwear might be the difference between a short-lived return to activity and the new you. The rate at which you start to exercise and the activity you choose might make or break you. Especially if you have a niggling injury like a sore achilles tendon or ongoing heel pain.

When looking at a new pair of runners, the first thing that must be considered is what activity you plan on doing. Wearing the wrong shoes if you are planning to train for a marathon, can lead to shin splints and plantar fasciitis. Plan on hiking? Wearing unsupportive shoes increases your chance of a rolled ankle or worse. Choosing the right footwear is just as important as the choice of activity itself.

Why? The position your foot takes whilst exercising influences the forces experienced in your feet, legs, hips and back. The correct shoe for you will give you will help distribute forces so you can avoid an injury. Different activities require different types of movement and the right shoe for you will aid your activity, not hinder it.

If you are unsure of which shoe will keep your feet and ankles safe and strong, stop in and see us for a biomechanical examination and gait analysis. Sounds fancy doesn’t it but our team are experts in assessing foot structure, running style, neuromuscular activity and footwear. We can not only advise you on the best footwear for you, we can also advise you on the best way to return to exercise. Stop in to see us, it could be the best investment you make this spring!

Have a great day today!
